Laura Hamby

Laura was born in New Orleans, LA and raised in Mobile, AL. During high school, she was a premiere athlete in both basketball and volleyball, ultimately named high schools Hall of Fame based on her athletic achievements. She attended Auburn University where she received a degree in Marketing.
In 2006, Laura opened the Sandlot Baseball and Softball Academy in Sicklerville, NJ. Her impact on the local baseball scene was recognized immediately as she took a small business to a level of success. Laura made everyone that trained at the Sandlot feel like one of the family and was always there to greet with a smile.
Laura also started the South Jersey Bulldogs baseball organization with today consists of 10 teams and over a 130 players as part of this proud organization.
Nothing brought her more joy than being at a baseball complex and watching her boys play the game that she loved. She was, is and will always be their biggest fan.

Baseball coach, baseball player, baseball fan, baseball junkie
Coach Sal, as many in the South Jersey baseball community knew him, wasnt always a coach. In fact, the teacher was more of a lifelong student of the game when it came to baseball. And he couldnt get enough of it. When he wasnt playing, coaching, watching or reading about it, he was talking about it. The baseball junkie was always looking for his fix especially in his younger years.
The St. John Neumann (Pa.) High School letter-winner, who later went on to play at West Chester University and eventually helped run the colleges annual summer baseball camp there for 20 years, returned to Neumann soon after graduation as an assistant coach. He later became head coach at his alma mater and remained for four years.
In the early 1990s, he settled in South Jersey and was hired as a physical education teacher at Burlington County Special Services School, where he eventually met his wife, Michelle. Sal and Michelle, a fellow special education teacher, brought one wonderful baseball player into the world, Timothy, 11.
Sal , who dedicated the last 13 years of his life to educating special needs children at BCS, also got the chance to bring baseball to work. With the absence of an organized baseball program at BCS, Sal did the next best thing he got his kids to play softball or kickball. He also rewarded well-behaved students with a few swings against his wiffle ball pitching machine he hid in the gymnasium closet.
His coaching wisdom also crossed the river when he took a job as an assistant coach at Paul VI High School in Haddonfield, where he met fellow assistant Chris Jones . The two, along with assistant Dan McGettigan, helped then-head coach Tony Mitchell catapult the Eagles baseball program to No. 1 in South Jersey by 1993, when the Eagles also received a No. 17 ranking in the nation.
It was Chris who convinced Sal, who played fast-pitch and slow-pitch softball for about 10 years, to return to playing baseball. And the two made quite a team, coaching together, working together at BCS and playing together for Warwick Shell in the Tri-County League (1994-97) and the Voorhees Phillies (1998-2007) of the SJMSBL. Sal, a top-of-the-lineup player known for his aggressive running style and gung-ho spirit, became an elite player. In his final season, he was named a league All-Star.
Perhaps the highlight to Sals baseball career occurred in 1993, when he reached his dream of becoming a college head coach. He took over at Williamson Trade School (Pa.) and remained for 12 years, eventually resigning to spend more time with his family, but leaving as the schools winningest coach.
Coach Sal passed away on Dec. 5, 2007 after a sudden heart attack. Just days earlier, he talked glowingly about the possibility of coaching again and about playing with the Voorhees Phillies in 2008 during a telephone conversation with Chris Jones. The two planned to attend a coaching clinic together later that week but that was before the Manager upstairs made a substitution.
And while Heavens baseball team got more aggressive that day, it was those who knew him that kept his spirit.
